The newest dance company to perform with Lobero’s Youth and Community Programs, Ballet Santa Barbara looks forward to their first annual performances for school children this October. Their new production, The Seasons, features choreography by artistic director Carrie Diamond and original music by music director Eric Valinsky. Taking their inspiration from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, this compelling exploration of dance and music brings musicians and dancers onstage together, transforming the stage space into a riveting spectrum of action and sound expressing the moods, colors, and feelings of the seasons. Part of the Lobero’s Youth and Community Programs for over 15 years, Santa Barbara Dance Theatre is a professional dance company that uses innovative dance techniques to illustrate elements of academic learning. The company’s school presentations explore various core curriculum subjects including science, math, language, history, the arts, and environmental stewardship.

The Lobero Theatre’s Artists in Residence, now in their 15th year, present world mythology and folklore using an innovative mixture of storytelling, movement, live music, and audience participation. BOXTALES is on the prestigious California Arts Council Touring Roster and has performed extensively throughout the western states. Their newest show, Trickster Tales, inspires self-reliance and creative problem solving on a humorous and magical journey with wily creatures who teach us folk wisdom, morals, and life lessons in this collection of trickster tales from around the world. School assemblies of Leyendas de Duende, Got Homer, Iron John, Prince Rama and the Monkey King, and Trickster Tales are available for elementary schools throughout the 2010-2011 school year. A popular publication found in the Santa Barbara News-Press the first Friday of every month, the Lobero Youth Spotlight focuses on Santa Barbara’s youth in the arts and provides a calendar of events for students to learn about shows, special events, performance opportunities, and arts programs in the area. All of the articles are written by local students who receive community service credit for their contributions. Throughout the year, the Lobero provides free tickets to school groups and programs serving at-risk youth and families. Performances are carefully selected to appeal to youngsters and families, particularly those from under-served communities. Organizations that have received InReach tickets this season include Casa de la Raza, Noah’s Anchorage, C.A.L.M., People’s Self-Help, Hospice of Santa Barbara Mentor Program, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America, Domestic Violence Solutions, and Girls Inc., among others.
